Spinodal decomposition refers to clustering type reaction that occurs in a homogeneous solution. The solution is unstable to small fluctuations in concentration or density, and therefore separates spontaneously into two phases, starting with small fluctuations and proceeding with a decrease in the Gibbs energy without a nucleation barrier.
