(Feel free to add more because I do not have any experience with this, though I'm betting someone else does because I hear this phrase thrown around a lot =D.)
Often times, it is unreasonable or impossible to calculate quantities or simulate scenarios, whether because of computationally intensive requirements or lack of a suitable algorithm. Monte Carlo methods refer to using many random samples to complete the calculation or simulation.
