Definition

A mesoporous material contains pores on the mesoscale (d~2-50nm). Materials with larger pores are called macroporous and with smaller pores are called microporous. Many oxides (e.g. silica) have been synthesized into mesoporous structures in the past few decades. These materials have applications as lightwieght, low dielectric constant/refractive index materials and high surface area/volume materials.
